Makaiwa Kanui serves InterVarsity Hawaiʻi alongside her ʻohana (family) through campus staff ministry and through the role of a justice programs coordinator. We seek to bless the college campus with the aloha (love) of ke Akua (God), shining truth and pouring hope into our students that they may also bless the campus, the islands, and the nations. Hawaiʻi Community College Hilo and University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo have among the highest percentage of Native Hawaiian students. Our students and greater Hawaiian community struggle with relating the gospel to their cultural identity with the introduction of the westernized gospel brought by the missionaries. We seek to reconcile faith and culture, and create a safe space for Native Hawaiian students to explore their cultural and faith identity, and to grow in aloha for self, land, peoples, and Creator.
